6 Scientifically Backed Reasons Why You Need Coffee Daily

Posted by Stephen Berke on Jul 6th 2018

If you want a beverage that can benefit your health, look no further than your humble cup of coffee.

Undoubtedly, caffeine stands as one of the most commonly used psychoactive drugs globally.  Caffeine lovers have given many reasons for partaking in the consumption of the drink. Most say they drink coffee because:

  • It helps in waking up,
  • It provides an often needed energy boost to keep the day moving,
  • And even more importantly, it helps one stay on a certain task for a prolonged period of time.

And indeed, these are realities we can hardly dispute. Said and done, you will equally agree with me that all of us usually get our caffeine fix from coffee. However, if taken in very large amounts, coffee can be more of a crutch with many drawbacks.

The recommended caffeine limit is basically around 400mg per day. Even so, it is easily possible to surpass this limit for heavy coffee drinkers. The drawbacks associated with this may include insomnia, restlessness, palpitations, or a fast heartbeat.

As such, most recent research on coffee clearly indicates that coffee is not bad for us when consumed in moderation. Although there is no clear causal mechanism to describe how the beverage causes health benefits, recent researches show that coffee consumers live longer and are less likely to experience certain illnesses.

All in all, coffee is one of the many drinks we must include in our everyday routine. According to science-backed claims, here are some of its benefits:

Liver Health

I know that the doubting Thomas’s of today might come up in arms to deny this; but actually, a report that combined the results of nine studies deduced that consumption of coffee is associated with a lower risk for cirrhosis, a liver complication caused by heavy consumption of alcohol. Here is the breakdown:

  • 1 cup of coffee daily was linked with a 22% reduced risk for the disease.
  • Two daily cups resulted in a 43% reduction risk.
  • Three cups would cause a 57% reduced risk
  • And finally, a maximum of four cups would have a 65% risk reduction effect.

Heart Disease

A combined review of at least 200 studies found that 2-3 cups of coffee per day would reduce the likelihood of dying from heart and blood vessel diseases by at least 19%.

Type 2 Diabetes

Further studies indicated that every additional cup of coffee taken per day resulted in a 7% reduced risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Cancer

The consumption of at least 3 cups of coffee a day was found to reduce the risk of developing cancer by not less than 18%. In addition, at least a cup a day will cause a 15% reduced risk for liver cancer as well as an 8% reduced risk for endometrial cancer.

Coffee drinkers have also been found less likely to suffer from pharyngeal/oral cancer and advanced prostate cancer.

Brain Health

Regular coffee drinkers are also less likely to experience brain related complications such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The intake of coffee reduces this risk by approximately around 16%.

Depression

Another study identified that around 50,000 women taking at least a cup of coffee per day reduced the risk of developing depression by 15%. Three cups, on the other hand, would reduce the risk of depression by 20%.

Further, the study revealed that more than 100,000 men and women who are heavy coffee drinkers (consumers of more than 4 cups of the beverage per day) had a prevalence of 45% - 53% less chances to commit suicide.

Mortality

Overall mortality rate vis-à-vis daily coffee consumption is reduced.  Coffee consumption reduces death risk in men by up to 12% while in women it reduces early death risk by at least 7%. Even better, coffee drinkers were less likely to die from circulatory and digestive related illnesses.

So, what are you waiting for? There’s nothing more flavorful than drinking coffee for better health!
