While we are well-versed on the origins of chocolate cake and coffee, one other favorite remains in the dark - the mysterious bavarian cream. We all love it and yet itÕs like nobody knows what itÕs made of.

Well, let us crack the mystery for you.

Also known as Creme Bavararoise, this classic dessert made with egg custard, gelatin, and whipped cream. The Bavarian cream was part of the repertoire of celebrated chef, Marie-Antoine Careme, who was popular for his elaborate style of cooking that is known as grande cuisine. It is he who is usually credited for the Bavarian Cream because he began giving recipes for it in the early 18th century. The dessert was thought to be named for Bavaria who was a powerful nation at the time, or for a particular distinguished Bavarian like the Wittelsbachs.

No one is a hundred percent sure about its origins however history suggests the possibility that the first Bavarian Cream was conjured by French chefs working in the court of the Wittelsbachs between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It could either be something that they thought of on their own, or were inspired by something very similar while working in Bavaria.
